Since “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “The Devil Wears Prada”, fashion has played a key role in enhancing the visual appeal of movies. Costume designers work hard to embrace the aesthetic of the time or place.
For example, in the movie “Priscilla” directed by Sofia Coppola, the costumes were designed in such a way that they transported the audience back to the 60s.
Here are some movies where fashion is very present:
1 - Priscilla
2 - Marie Antoinette
Fun fact: in the scene where Marie Antoinette is having fun with shoes, it’s shown a Converse All Stars, indicating through fashion that she is just a young girl.
3 - 13 going on 13
Jenna Rink, our moodboard queen.
4 - The Devil Wears Prada
Does Miranda Priestly remind you of somebody? If you said Anna Wintour, you're right!
5 - The Parent Trap
Besides Elizabeth James being a fashion icon in The Parent Trap, there's more to the story about fashion. The way we (and the parents) could differentiate the girls was because of their completely opposite fashion styles. So, when they change places, they use fashion as a way to disguise themselves as each other.
Also, the way Meredith Blake is dressed intensifies her villainous energy.
One of my favorite things about this movie is that Elizabeth (the mom) is inspired by Princess Diana. 2 fashion icons!
6 - Barbie
Barbie is a doll that sells dozens of dolls dressed both as professionals and in outfits appropriate for specific places (such as Beach Barbie wearing a swimsuit for the beach).
In the movie, it's the same; there's Presidential Barbie, Disco Barbie, and more!
Thank you for reading!!! I love fashion and movies, so I hope it was as fun for you to read this as it was for me to write. See you soon!!!
